What are stocks?

Stocks are securities that grant you ownership rights in a publicly traded company. When you buy a company’s stocks, you acquire a portion of that company. A share represents a unit of ownership in stocks; the more shares you acquire, the larger portion of the company you own. Companies issue stocks to raise funds for the development of their business.

In the stock market, there are two main categories of stocks: common and preferred. The primary difference between them is that common stocks grant shareholders the right to vote at company meetings and receive a portion of the growing profits, whereas preferred stocks do not provide these rights. Preferred stocks may have higher fixed dividend payments.
